digital-mediaThe digitization of music has been something of a blessing and a curse, causing huge arguments between music producers and consumers. There is no doubt at all that digital music represents a fantastic way forward in terms of music distribution and portability. From the first mobile turntables, through the personal cassette player and on to the CD Walkman and MP3 players and mobile phones of today, the portability of music has been paramount, with more of us wanting to take not just our favourite music with us, but virtually our entire music collection.

But with increased portability there is always an increased risk of piracy, and with easy facilities for sharing data across networks and the internet, digital music has witnessed both an expanse in terms of affordable music distribution solutions for new bands whilst causing digital encoding and distribution limitation challenges for existing, professional music companies.

But one thing is clear, the MP3, as with digital video, is here to stay, and a balance will need to be struck between easy distribution and portability on the one hand, and helping tackle the issue of piracy on the other.
